Getting Started with Freecell

Playing Freecell is accessible to beginners but offers deep strategic depth for veterans. Follow these steps to start playing:

1. The Deal

The game begins by dealing all 52 cards into eight vertical tableau columns. Unlike Pyramid Solitaire, every card is visible immediately.

2. Build the Foundations

Your goal is to move all cards to the four foundation piles (usually displayed at the top right). You build each foundation pile up by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King.

3. Move Cards in the Tableau

You can move cards within the eight columns. Cards must be placed in descending order (e.g., placing a 7 on an 8) and must alternate colors (placing a red Queen on a black Jack).

4. Use Free Cells

Utilize the four empty Free Cell spots to temporarily hold a single card. This is crucial for unblocking stacks of cards and maneuvering pieces to the foundation.

5. Clear the Board

The game is won when all 52 cards have been successfully moved into their respective foundation piles.

Fundamental Freecell Rules

To master Vita Freecell, understanding the strict movement rules is essential. Unlike Klondike, Freecell guarantees that every game is theoretically solvable, provided you follow the correct mechanics.

The Four Zones

  • Tableau: The eight columns containing all 52 cards. You must build down, alternating colors.
  • Foundation: The four target zones where you build up by suit, Ace to King.
  • Free Cells: There are four temporary holding spots. You can hold one card per Free Cell at any time.

Movement Restrictions

When moving cards between the tableau columns, you cannot skip colors. If you need to move a stack of three cards (King, Queen, Jack) to another column, the destination column must have a Card of the opposite color, and its value must be one rank higher than your stack (e.g., a red Ace).

If a destination column does not meet these criteria, you must use your Free Cells to shuffle individual cards out of the stack before proceeding.
